Donald Allan Fortune, 80, of Des Moines, Iowa, went home to be with our Lord and Savior Saturday, July 20, 2024, with his loving wife, Linda, of 60 years by his side.
Don was born on February 24, 1944, in Des Moines, IA. He was the son of Denver and Wilma (Cook) Fortune. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in Des Moines, IA. in January 1962. On January 30, 1964, Don married the love of his life, Linda (Kapfer) Fortune. They celebrated their 60th year anniversary in January 2024 with their family.
Don joined the United States Air Force in 1963 and was stationed in Taiwan and served as Crew Chief of a C130 during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in February 1969. After the service, Don worked for the United States Post Office and retired in 1997 after a lifelong career.
Don had a passion for fishing, camping and sports. He was a huge fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dean Fortune, sister, Helen (Fortune) Bailiff, his two brothers-in-law, Larry Dyer and Duane Bailiff and sister-in-law, Kathryn (Kirkpatrick) Fortune as well as granddaughter, Clara Allen. He is survived by his wife, Linda (Kapfer) Fortune, his children, Douglas (Casey) Fortune, John Fortune (fiancée, Irina Allen), grandchildren, Gregory, Rebecca, Josey, Jane, Nadine and great -grandsons, Roman and Henry. He is also survived by his sister, Anita (Fortune) Dyer and sister-in-law, Mary Jo Buenemann and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions can be made in honor of Don Fortune to the Animal Rescue League of Des Moines or the M.S. Society.
