OBITUARY

Eugene L. Carter Sr. (86) lived a life that was truly inspiring. Despite facing health challenges for the past six years, he never let it dampen his spirit or his determination. Eugene’s courage in battling kidney disease and a heart ailment was a testament to his strength and resilience.

Eugene passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Born on August 29, 1937, in Belmond, Iowa, Eugene was the son of Zola Christie and Aroby Carter. He grew up with a strong work ethic and a drive to succeed. After attending Belmond High School, he made the brave decision to enlist in the United States Navy, serving his country with honor and pride. His dedication to his service was evident as he received an honorable discharge in 1963.

Following his military service, Eugene embarked on a new journey, pursuing a career in auto body repair. Starting out in his own garage with the help of his eldest son, Eugene Jr., he built a thriving business that eventually led him to purchase a building in downtown Des Moines. Action Auto Repair became a testament to Eugene’s hard work, determination, and passion for his craft.

After several successful decades in the auto repair industry, Eugene decided to retire and explore new ventures. He shifted his focus to real estate, investing in properties such as Mary Ann’s Bakery on Indianola Avenue and various residential homes. Eugene’s entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to adapt showcased his ability to embrace change and continue to grow.

Beyond his accomplishments, Eugene’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his loving wife Kongmy, his past wife Beverly Rumley, and his children Eugene Jr. (Debbie), Ron (Ann), Valeria (Scott) Curry, and Dani (Bob) Awtry. Eugene was blessed with 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and even one great-great-grandchild. His family was his source of strength and happiness, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

As we gather to bid farewell to Eugene, let us remember the incredible legacy he leaves behind. His story serves as a reminder that no matter the challenges we face, we have the power to overcome and achieve greatness. Eugene’s life was a testament to the indomitable human spirit, and his memory will continue to inspire us all.

In our hearts and minds, Eugene’s spirit will live on, reminding us to face adversity with courage, pursue our dreams relentlessly, and cherish the love and support of our families. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his inspiring journey continue to guide us on.
