Michael Joseph Caffrey was born on November 13th in Des Moines, Iowa to Jim and Jane Caffrey. He joined his older brother Pat (Linda), and soon followed brother Dan (Pam) and finally sister Anne Marie (Doug) Stumpf. He and wife Debbie were proud South Siders, having spent the majority of their lives there.
After graduating from West Des Moines Dowling in 1973, Mike joined the Unites States Marine Corps stationed in North Carolina and California. He finished his tour in Hawaii and was honorably discharged in 1978. After transitioning to civilian life, Mike fell in love and married his former neighbor Debbie Gunter. Their first son Christopher was born in 1979 and passed shortly after. Son Ryan came into the world a few years later. He was their pride and joy and passed in 2022.
Mike worked for Cargill in Des Moines for 28 years, and recently retired. He was known as a very hard worker, very rarely missing work. He will be missed by his coworkers.
Along with his wife, Mike is survived by his brothers, sister and sister-in-law Mary Desmond and many nieces and nephews. Also preceding him in death was his yellow lab Sunnie, who he loved to take for long walks. Mike rejoins his sons Ryan and Christopher, parents Jim and Jane, in laws Dee and Darrell Gunter and of course, his beloved dog Sunnie.
On Thursday, October 27 there will be a visitation from 9:30-10:00AM with a funeral service to follow at 10:00AM at Sunset Memorial Chapel. Mike will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
