Paul L. Vlieger

Paul was born in Winterset, Iowa and graduated from Winterset High in 1952. He then served in the Army in Korea for two years. Upon his return, Paul studied at Iowa State University and graduated with his Bachelor of Science in 1961. He later furthered his education at Drake University, where he obtained his teaching credentials.

Paul married Norma Kingland on June 4, 1960, which he referred to as his best decision! Family always came first, and he liked traveling, camping, fishing and gatherings.

Paul always enjoyed math. Professionally, he started his career as a field auditor for AC Nielsen, a position that moved his family to Kokomo, Indiana. However, the time and distance from extended family caused Paul and Norma to move back to central Iowa, and they built the first of two homes in Norwalk. Paul taught math at Valley High School in West Des Moines for 17 years, also working for H&R Block during the tax season. Thereafter, Paul worked in the computer field for a company owned by Jim Smidt, followed by 15 years as a tax consultant for Sears. He retired at the age of 78.

Paul made his choices to Jesus Christ and walk with God at the age of 14. His life demonstrated this commitment, and he shared his family home for fellowship and gatherings over the years.

During the last two years of his life, Paul enjoyed a remodeled lower level with the amenities of assisted living, all within the comforts of home! Paul never tired of the special love, companionship and care he received from his wife, and sometimes he would even say he appreciated Timothy’s support and love too IF only he could find him! Paul received excellent nursing care at home, particularly from Martha White (who cared for him with much dedication, friendship and love) and Right At Home, a local home care agency that never failed in challenging times. Paul passed away peacefully on May 17th with his family and Martha by his side.

Paul is preceded in death by his parents, James and Dorothy Vlieger, and two sisters Imogene (Jasper) DeRaad and Janiece (Harry) Tinnell. He is survived by his loving wife Norma and two sons, Phillip (Sonia) and Timothy; sister Joyce (Dean) Klenk; two brothers, Jim (Goldy) and Ken (Shelly), and many extended family members.

A private memorial service will be held at 1PM on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Sunset Memorial Chapel followed by a time of refreshments. Paul will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
