Pong Sun Weaver, aged 83, died suddenly on November 3, 2024. Services will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at Sunset Memorial Chapel, 7601 Fleur Drive in Des Moines. Visitation will start at 1 pm with services at 2 pm.
Pong was born in Korea in March 1941, during the Japanese occupation. When she was ten years old, her family’s home was destroyed in the Korean War. She thirsted for education but was not allowed to continue past the seventh grade.
In 1968, Pong gave birth to a son, Byung gil Kim on May 22, 1968, who was placed for adoption. She never forgot him, and her heart continued to yearn for him all the days of her life.
In 1980, she married Raymond Weaver, who was serving in the US Air Force, and they moved to the United States. Pong worked hard on mastering English and became a proud citizen of the United States in 1985. After moving to several states, Pong and Ray settled in Ray’s hometown of Des Moines. Pong continued to work very hard to support the household. Her supervisors at Holiday Inn in Des Moines and Farm Bureau found her work exemplary. Her neighbors in the Gray’s Woods neighborhood appreciated her lovely garden and kind words.
As they approached retirement, Ray and Pong connected with his grown children Carmen, Corine, Catherine, and Ron. They enjoyed visiting the children and grandchildren. Pong took care of Ray through his final illness, and he passed in 2021.
Pong is survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara A Sparks; and by Ray’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; we hope by her son, Byung gil Kim and his family.
Pong will be remembered fondly by the staff and residents of Senior Suites of Urbandale, who experienced a lady who was feisty, sad, helpful, and kind.
