Sandra Hagen

Sandra (Sandy) Sue Schultz Hagen (age 77) of Prole, Iowa passed away from this life on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, surrounded by her family. A visitation for Sandra will be held at Sunset Memorial Chapel at 7601 Fleur Drive in Des Moines from 5 to 6 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024. The celebration of her life service will directly follow at 6 p.m.

Sandra was born on October 4,1946 in West Des Moines, Iowa to Beatrice (Lein) and Jack Schultz. She grew up with her four siblings and attended schools in West Des Moines and Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1964. She married her prom date and the love of her life, Kenneth (Ken) Gene Hagen in 1967. They were married over 43 years until his death in 2011. In addition to being a homemaker, Sandra worked over the years at the Prole Post Office, the Norwalk Public Library, and the Simpson College Book Store.

Sandy and Ken were blessed by the births of their children Stephanie Sue, Melanie Marie, Kenneth Gene (Kenny) Jr., Matthew Mark, and Sean Alein. They were devoted and proud parents. They enjoyed attending their children’s school and sports events, celebrating their successes, and watching them grow into adulthood. They took pleasure as their family expanded to include their children’s spouses and were overjoyed with the addition of grandchildren. Sandy was able to see yet another generation of their family with the births of their great grandchildren.

Sandra was strong in her Christian faith, and she was a loving, nurturing, wise, and intelligent woman who was always thoughtful in her words and action. She loved nature, traveling and animals. She was a voracious reader, gifted artistically, enjoyed all genres of music, and liked the challenge of completing crossword puzzles. She was an at home champion of the Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune television shows. Her culinary skills were legendary and appreciated by both her immediate and extended family.

Sandra is survived by her children Stephanie Hagen of Prole, IA; Melanie Waterman (Allan) of Des Moines, IA; Kenny Hagen (Heather) of Lorimor, IA; Matthew Hagen (Teresa) of Osceola, IA. Also, her grandson, Kenny (Caitlyn and great grandson, Carson); grandson, Isaac Welcher (Chelsea and great granddaughter, Carson); grandson, Chance Waterman; grandson, Seth Waterman; grandson, Evan Hagen; granddaughter Kimberly Keller (Caleb); granddaughter, Nadine Waterman; granddaughter, Ava Hagen; granddaughter, Fancy Hagen and granddaughter, Frankie Hagen.

 

Sandra is also survived by her sister, Cathy (Randy) Cory of West Des Moines; and her nieces and nephews and their families. Also, Kenneth’s siblings and their families.

Sandy was preceded in death by her late husband, Kenneth Gene Hagen; her son, Sean Alein; her mother and stepfather, Beatrice and Joseph Dennis; her father, Jack Schultz; and her brother, Jack Schultz; sister, Celia Houchens; sister Marilyn (John) McManus and father and mother-in-law, LuDell and Bess Hagen and members of both her own and Kenneth’s extended family.
